Task 5: Themes in modern non-fiction time to complete task - 1 hour
Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein has been used to both condemn and affirm technology. Today technology has changed our world, perhaps
more than any other time in history. But with technological advances comes responsibilities. Read the article about laws and ethics
involving technology. Write a summary of the article and your response to it.
Task 6: Essay time to complete task - 3 hours
Essay must be typed and submitted using Google Docs, unless you receive other instructions. You MUST DOUBLE-SPACE AND LEFT-JUSTIFY
YOUR PAPER. You must complete the rubric handout and turn it in to have your essay graded. Essay must be at least 400 words and include
examples from the book. Please note that the grading of your essay may take 24 hours or more. You may use the link from the OWL Lab for a
complete understanding of what is involved in writing an argumentative essay.
Choose 1 essay topic:
1. Write a paper in which you discuss the elements Shelly uses in Frankenstein that cause the story to be full of terror. Discuss how the
setting, nature, and the plot make this story Gothic or argue how the story does not meet the qualifications of Gothic literature. Be sure to
use evidence from the text to support your opinion.
2. Mary Shelley has Victor Frankenstein create a living being, who then becomes a murderer. Who, or what, is responsible for the wretch's
behavior? What is the creator’s role in the life of his creation? What should be the relationship of the creator to the creation? Frankenstein
fulfill his role as creator or does he fail in that role?
3. Research cloning and write an argumentative essay on the whether it is ethical or not.
Task 7: Music and Literature time to complete task - 2 hours
Many contemporary songs are inspired by literature and share common ideas and themes. This assignment involves three parts. First, read
Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s “Rime of the Ancient Mariner” (Pages 48-53 in the 12th Grade Supplemental Reading). Next, listen to the poem
while viewing the art (you may wish to read along with the narrator) on YouTube. Finally, listen to Iron Maiden’s version of the poem. Write
an ABC essay on how romanticism is used by Coleridge in this poem.
Task 8: Art and Literature time to complete task - 1 hour
Go to the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Romanticism website. View the slideshow at the top of the page.
Choose at least one painting and write a one paragraph essay on which theme of romanticism you feel is represented by the painting(s). You
may need to review Task 2. Be sure to tell which painting you chose and why.
Task 9: Exam time to complete task - 1 hour
Must achieve a 70% or greater to pass.
Task 10: FIT/Grammar
Activities assigned on a daily basis.
Task 11: Contemporary Fiction time to complete task - 15 hours
Read Geek Love or a book from the Dean Koontz Frankenstein series and write a 200 word essay or multimedia project with presentation. Compare one of the characters to Mary Shelley’s monster. Do you see similarities? Differences? Back up your thesis with examples from each book.
OR read Nightmares and Dreamscapes: Compare and contrast King’s use of horror to Shelley's use of horror.
You must increase your TABE score to receive credit for this section.
Task 12: Projects time to complete task - 6 hours
First Presentation: Prepare a presentation in which you discuss the themes from Frankenstein across literature, film, art, and music.
Second Presentation: Prepare a presentation, using a different tool than the one used in the first presentation, in which you discuss
Romanticism in literature, arts and architecture.
