Nelson Mandela, and Martin Luther King, Jr. Read the following and write a 3 paragraph essay examining how the different authors view
civil disobedience. From the 11 grade supplemental readings:

From the 9th grade supplemental readings:
I Have a Dream by Martin Luther King, Jr., pages 114 - 116
Task 18: Essay time to complete task - 3 hours
Essay must be typed and submitted using Google Docs, unless you receive other instructions. You MUST DOUBLE-SPACE AND LEFT-
JUSTIFY YOUR PAPER. You must complete the rubric handout and turn it in to have your essay graded. Essay must be at least 400 words
and include examples from the book. Please note that the grading of your essay may take 24 hours or more. You may use the link from the
OWL Lab for a complete understanding of what is involved in writing an argumentative essay.
Choose 1 essay topic:
1. Write a reflective essay on: How are you self-reliant? Identify several ways that you are or plan to be self-reliant. Be sure to discuss each
way that you are or plan to be self-reliant with specific examples.
2. What is the role of civil disobedience today?

Many contemporary songs are inspired by literature and share common ideas and themes. Pick a song or songs from the list below, which
share common ideas or themes from this unit. Write 1 ABC paragraph explaining how the selections for this unit and your selected song
share a theme or idea. See Music and Literature Assignment. List of songs for this unit:

Choose one painting and write a one paragraph essay on which theme you feel is represented by the painting. Be sure to tell which
painting you chose and why.

Read Water for Elephants or The Call of the Wild. 200 word essay or multimedia project with presentation. Choose one or more themes of
transcendentalist/naturalist thought and discuss it with regards to your selected novel.
You must increase your TABE score to receive credit for this section.

Second presentation: Rework a foundational document to more accurately reflect the needs of today’s society. Create a presentation (you
must present to teacher) on each of the topics above.
