Essay must be typed and submitted using Google Docs, unless you receive other instructions. You MUST DOUBLE-SPACE AND LEFT-JUSTIFY
YOUR PAPER. You must complete the rubric handout and turn it in to have your essay graded. Essay must be at least 400 words and include
examples from the book. Please note that the grading of your essay may take 24 hours or more. Please be sure to read Writing
Informative/Explanatory Essays for a complete understanding of what is involved in writing an informative essay.
Choose 1 essay topic:
Many contemporary songs are inspired by literature and share common ideas and themes. Pick a song or songs from the list below, which
share common ideas or themes from Romeo and Juliet. Write 1 ABC paragraph explaining how the Romeo and Juliet and your selected song
share a theme or idea. See Music and Literature Example. List of songs for To Romeo and Juliet :
Go to: Dali artwork. Choose one of the Dali illustrations. Choose one line (or several) from the play that most clearly depicts the art. Write
an ABC paragraph explaining your choice of both the drawing and the line(s) from the play.

Must achieve a 70% or greater to pass.

Activities assigned on a daily basis.
Task 23: Contemporary Fiction time to complete task - 10 hours
Read either The Fault in Our Stars or Summer of Swans or The Notebook or another book on love/fate (must be with the permission of the
teacher and you must provide the book. A 200 word essay or multimedia project with presentation.
Prompts (Choose 1):
1. Identify and discuss the love/fate or the individual vs. society as portrayed in the book.
2. Discuss the choices that lead to the love/fate.
3. What could the character(s) have done differently?
You must increase your TABE score to receive credit for this section.

First Presentation: Prepare a presentation in which you discuss the themes from Romeo and Juliet across literature, film, art, and music.
Second Presentation: Prepare a presentation, using a different tool than the one used in the first presentation, in which you discuss love,
fate or the individual vs. society across the pieces you have studied.

- How does the suicidal impulse that both Romeo and Juliet exhibit relate to the overall theme of young love? Does Shakespeare seem to consider a self-destructive tendency inextricably connected with love, or is it a separate issue? Why do you think so?
- Discuss the relationships between parents and children in Romeo and Juliet. How do Romeo and Juliet interact with their parents? Are they rebellious, in the modern sense? How do their parents feel about them?
- How does Shakespeare treat death in Romeo and Juliet? Frame your answer in terms of legal, moral, familial, and personal issues. Bearing these issues in mind, compare the deaths of Romeo and Juliet, Romeo and Mercutio, and Mercutio and Tybalt.
